Name: ASUS RT-AX55 AX1800 Dual Band WiFi 6 Gigabit Router, 802.11ax, Lifetime Internet Security, Parental Control, Mesh WiFi Support, MU-MIMO, OFDMA, 4 Gigabit LAN Ports, Beamforming Here is the analysis for the Amazon product reviews: Fakespot detects fake reviews, fake products and unreliable sellers using AI. It would be expensive to hand test each unit before shipping it out, and the retail cost would be much higher, which ASUS et al won't do unless their competitors do the same. That process means a certain % failure rate no matter what. It has to do with mass manufacturing in China and the need to keep costs low to compete. There will always be dead and "lemon" routers from any manufacturer. They have the best stock firmware, and AI Mesh was a nice free addition. I use Ubiquiti and eero today, but still recommend ASUS over any other brand for all-in-one routers. I also had the exact opposite experience as the other guy: I used ASUS all the way until around 2012, and they were reliable. Test it out, if it works, keep it, if not you can exchange it then. If your WiFi needs are pretty standard for a home, I'd just get the AX55 first, from somewhere with a 30 day return policy. Over the 6-10 years+ lifetime, the difference in price is insignificant. Since you are buying new, I'd recommend buying an AX model, not so much because of WiFi 5 vs 6, but because the AX models have better, more modern hardware and designs, even if your home devices are mostly WiFi 5. Thanks a lot for the help!ĪX is the newer WiFi 6 standard. And by the modeling name, I'm wondering what the AX has over the AC for the 86U model. I'm not opposed to spending money on the expensive option, just don't want to if I really don't need to. I'm wondering if that steeper price tag is worth it or would I be fine with any of the cheaper options. $250 AX5700 (RT-AX86U) (Weird, the price seems to fluctuate constantly between $250 and $280) Also might be interested in starting a homelab in the future as I'm studying for a Network+ exams and the concept seems interesting. I do plan on having room mates in the future, so that along with guests that come over, devices connected would fluctuate of course. The devices connected would be 2 computers, phone, 2-3 TVs, Playstation, Ring security systems and that's about it. ![]() (So maybe QoS functionality might be neat to mess around with?) Other top priorities would be streaming UHD content. ![]() I game here and there but would consider gaming among the priorities of a good router. For a background, the home will be bi-level 2000 sq ft. Otherwise, everyone seems to recommend them. Among complaints I hear about Netgear and TP-Link, the only thing I hear about Asus is overheating problems. I've looked at a few brands and I think I'm going to go with Asus. The only option I have is Optimum and despite the horror stories, I've heard some people upgrading their routers to have a decent stable connection. I'm moving into a home in a month and instead of renting a modem and router, I'd like to purchase my own. u/RoweDent created this awesome resource on network theory u/tht1kidd_ has created a suggestion post regarding information everyone needs to provide when asking a question about their network There have been some excellent guides written in this sub, and we're always looking for more!
